About the latest Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares concerts, Kurt and Kristin Reil of The Grip Weeds say, "Aside from the obvious need to help the families of victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares also addresses the victim of budget cuts in public schools: Music Education. We both participated in the high school music program, which was a rewarding after-school activity that made us better students and pointed us in a direction that eventually turned into a career. We have been lucky to have the opportunity to travel and perform our music in front of live audiences all over the world. Our first exposure to the joy music can bring to others began in the school bands we played in. Playing the Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares Rockin' Winter Holiday Weekend to raise money and enlighten people is a very cool thing for us to do."
"Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares is a great idea. It's an honor to be a part of something this positive, to contribute through music," adds Tom Brislin of Spiraling, who recently served as the band in a production of The Who's "Tommy" and toured with Violent Femmes in support of its acclaimed new CD, "Transmitter."
"I like what Jersey Jams Fund is doing, and I’m glad to be a part of it," adds Mike Grau of The Marbles and Broadway Central Café, whose annual Christmas Dogs of War Benefit has raised $15,000 for cancer-related charities over 15 years.
Since March 10, Jersey Jams Fund has raised nearly $15,000 in music scholarship for the New Jersey Children of 9/11, whose families are now applying through their county United Way’s Family Advocate Program. New Jersey Families of 9/11 are encouraged to tap into Jersey Jams Fund through the Family Advocate Program.
The scholarship money was raised through CD sales of the charity compilation "Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares," ticket sales of a statewide benefit concert series, a $5,000 donation from co-sponsor Comcast in Eatontown, N.J., and a $1,000 donation from co-sponsors Black Potatoe Records and Atomic Productions in Clinton, N.J.
Jersey Jams Fund also produced the Jersey Cares Summer Arts Carnival on July 21 at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park. The event was free to all New Jersey children and many New Jersey Families of 9/11. Highlights included 10 performances by New Jersey music acts, a community art project for children, art and music workshops and boardwalk-like carnival fun.
A "Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares" concert video featuring series footage of Jersey favorite Glen Burtnik, buzzing singer-songwriter Matt Witte, the anti-folk duo Duende, future hip-hop stars Ta-Ta and Lenny Lawson and Black Potatoe recording artists Matt Angus Thing and Kathy Phillips will air on cable television stations throughout New Jersey as part of a promotional holiday sales campaign for the CD, now on sale for $10. Co-sponsor DigitalMV.com in Point Pleasant Beach volunteered the eight-month project. For airdates and a listing of previous Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares concerts, check
www.jerseyjamsfund.org
"I was happy to create the Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares concert video for Jersey Jams Fund because it’s a worthwhile cause," says John Ficarrotta, owner of DigitalMV.com, a Web site that airs videos of independent acts made by Ficarrotta, who also owns co-sponsor Rockaway Beach CDs in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. "I think children can benefit greatly from the power of music, and I’m glad to see Jersey Jams Fund aims to do that."
The Jersey Jams Fund music scholarship was established for the New Jersey Children of 9/11 to pursue the study of music, which can increase their math skills, SAT scores and college opportunities and bring them joy. Jersey Jams Fund will help pay for music lessons, school band equipment, sheet music, music camp, graduate school and expenses for auditions, competitions and festivals. The fund will be expanded to help other Jersey children benefit from the positive impact of music.
Jersey Jams Fund will produce more concerts and summer arts carnivals that children and the New Jersey Families of 9/11 can attend for free. The Fund also hopes to raise enough money to open arts education centers to serve as after-school, weekend and summer arts enrichment for youngsters throughout the Garden State. The Fund is pursuing grants and more sponsors to fulfill its mission of fighting terrorism with the healing power of music and enriching children with the positive impact of the arts in honor of victims of terrorism.
