JERSEY JAMS, JERSEY CARES ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE FEST
Statewide Beatles tribute for 40th anniversary of “Please Please Me”
Saturday, March 22 with Eight Shows in One Day!
As the nation drifts to war and the state considers cutting $32 million in
arts funding,
Jersey Jams Fund,
a
United Way
music education program for New Jersey children, has responded with the statewide
Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares All You Need Is Love Fest
. The eight-concert series of Beatles tributes by New Jersey artists will celebrate the 40th anniversary of “Please Please Me” and the 34th anniversary of
John & Yoko’s
first
Bed-In for Peace
. Produced by many Jersey music scenesters, the shows will raise money for a music scholarship fund for the New Jersey Children of 9/11.
Jersey Jams Fund
has awarded nearly $15,000 in music scholarship to about 20 children between the ages of 4 and 16 with money raised from its
Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares
charity compilation and benefit concert series, as well as from corporate donations.
Three of the
Love Fest
’s four all-ages shows will offer music mentorship in the form of raffles for “
Love Me Do
” harmonica packages.
Gorny Music Shop
in Somerville has donated three
Hohner
harmonicas and three lesson books to coincide with a lesson three of New Jersey’s best harmonica players will provide to a winning child or teen. Winners will learn “
Love Me Do
,” which they can perform onstage if they wish.
One of the artists who’ll provide a harmonica lesson during the
Love Fest
is
Gregg Cagno
, a
Hunterdon
County-raised singer-songwriter who’ll also participate in the
Friends of Teen Arts
’ Young Composers program that day. “I enjoy the opportunity to participate in events like the Young Composers program and the
All You Need Is Love Fest
because it gives me a chance to pass on some of the joy and excitement that music has given to me,” says
Cagno
, a recording artist for the Clinton-based
Black Potatoe Records
, one of
Jersey Jams Fund
’s largest sponsors. “‘
Love Me Do
’ was the song that made me pick up the harmonica and so I’m thrilled to pass it onto the next generation of Beatleheads.”
The Jersey Jams, Jersey Cares All You Need Is Love Fest also will include two shows with Beatles-inspired power-pop bands at the
Court Tavern
in New Brunswick and
Hamilton Street Café
in Bound Brook. Canvassing a variety of musical styles, the Love Fest will present A
Beatles Open Blues Jam
for Bernie, which also will raise funds for
Bernie Brausewetter
. The
B.B. & the Stingers
guitarist recently underwent quintuple bypass surgery while in Memphis to compete in the
International Blues Challenge
. Other
